The Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv together with the Museum of the History of Fashion presented a unique exhibition of children’s costumes from 1820 to 1920, which tells about how children’s fashion changed over a hundred years.

The exhibition at the Khanenko Museum was announced.

What kind of clothes did children wear two centuries ago? Did children’s fashion exist then and what was it like? Why did boys wear skirts and dresses up to the age of 6, and girls were dressed in tight corsets from birth? What influence did clothing have on a child’s leisure time? Why were little ladies so often forced to only watch their brothers play? And under what circumstances was a boy finally given the right to wear men’s clothing?

The exhibition presents more than 20 children’s costumes, as well as interesting details that are somehow connected with children’s fashion of past centuries: accessories, toys, shoes, photographs.

Wedding wreaths, a brooch made of the hair of a deceased child, ballroom notebooks of young ladies, where there was a list of gentlemen with whom they would dance that evening; miniature hats complete with gloves; toy “safe dogs” in which children could hide coins or valuable things for them.

In addition, the exhibition will be complemented by photographs of children in various outfits of a specific period.
